The Congress leader held interaction with the people on Tuesday. The janata darbar at Bhuvemau guest house ground began around 10 am and Priyanka Gandhi met more than 300 people in groups. The locals came with different requests, from seeking help for treatment of their ailing family members, to seeking better road connectivity and drinking water. Priyanka Gandhi met locals in groups, personally took their applications and assured them of all possible help.
In a bid to strengthen the Congress party in the region, she also met newly-appointed presidents of gram panchayat, Nyaya Panchayat and the block leaders to set the next two months' agenda — undertake padyatras (footmarch) to spread message about UPA's food security scheme. Madras CafĂ© recreates the history by touching upon Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination
John Abraham is very much happy to produce Madras Café in which he is playing an Intelligence officer. The film depicts the political scenario in early 1990s in the state of Tamil Nadu thus, during the time when then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated. A character who looks like Rajiv Gandhi present in the film showcasing the brutal murder of then Indian Prime Minister has caused for some debates in the film world and politics.
The film is set in the early 1990s, around the time of Rajiv Gandhi's assassination. It was insinuated that the LTTE had a hand in the slaying of the Indian Prime Minister on May 21, 1991, at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu and the film is based against this backdrop. What has really become the talking point is the likeness of the actor who plays Rajiv Gandhi in the film. One can clearly see the resemblance the actor bears to the political leader. In waiving the crowd, the dress with a tri-colour shawl around the neck, the type of watch worn – all have got tremendous similarity with Rajiv Gandhi. Further the character who plays the main villain character is almost look like V Prabhakaran – the killed LTTE chief.
LTTE has been under scanner behind the killing of Rajiv Gandhi. Madras CafĂ© recreates the history by touching upon Rajiv Gandhi’s subject. John said, “Madras CafĂ© is a revision for those who know what had happened, through our eyes but most importantly, it is for our youth who is unaware of the Indian politics of early 90s. This film aims at enlightening their knowledge in an entertaining way.” “Though I am apolitical, I've been there and seen it all. The story of the assassination (of Rajiv Gandhi) stayed with me. When Shoojit (director) offered Madras Cafe to me 7 years ago I said, 'Wow! Someone actually wants to do this. So let's do it” he added.
"Moving to see "Madras Cafe" on Rajiv Gandhi's birthday. Strong second half, fast-paced film. Outstanding direction & acting, especially by John Abraham” said Union Minister Shashi Tharoor.
Sircar, the director of the movie said: "This is not a biopic on Rajiv Gandhi this is not a story based on him. Yes, you can say that there is a similarity to that incident. There is a similarity in the facial structure (of the actor who plays the said role)." However, the director clarified, "We have taken that incident which we read in the paper. Rest, whatever is around it, has been fictionalised in the scripting. But somewhere you may find some historical references in the fictionalised bit too”.
Madras Café also stars Nargis Fakhri in the lead role as an International journalist. The film directed by Shoojit Sircar is released on Friday, August 23.

Remembering great visionary Rajiv Gandhi on his 69th birth anniversary
Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister and a legendary Congress leader who is known as the creator of ‘modern India’, was one of the most visionary leaders of post-independence India. His insights and initiatives into liberalization of Indian economy, technological advancement and most importantly bringing the computer revolution in India, made him a futuristic leader of his times. India went through a lot of changes under Rajiv Gandhi’s leadership.
Rajiv Gandhi’s personality and leadership brought in a high level of dynamism in India’s foreign relations. He also left his own personal mark on India’s foreign policy. Rajiv Gandhi was a humble and polite leader as well as an extremely ambitious and dynamic Prime Minister. His mature and effective leadership and initiative led India to become one of the leading markets in telecommunication and Information technology.
Rajiv Gandhi created a separate identity for himself and he also was successful in taking forward Indira Gandhi and Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru’s initiatives as well. He scripted a new vision for the Non-Alignment Movement (NAM) - Nuclear disarmament. He was a great believer of peace and this belief propelled him to propose the idea of disarmament. He championed the cause of NAM, which he saw as a very important pedestal to facilitating peaceful relations between nations. He realized the futility of spending millions on arms and ammunition, and the wild pursuit of arms race, when a huge section of the population was starving.
Rajiv Gandhi played a vital role to improve the bilateral relationships with the United States of America and subsequently expanded the economic and scientific cooperation with it. A revived foreign policy, emphasizing on the economic liberalization and information and technology helped India to find a mark in the global map.
Under his tenure as the Prime Minister, India also took up the cause of fighting against apartheid in South Africa. India’s role is considered instrumental in establishing the South Africa Fund under the cause of Non-Alignment Movement and thus provided support for many South African countries in their struggle for independence through this fund. Rajiv Gandhi’s farsighted initiative also resulted into formation of G15 countries for promotion of the non-alignment movement further enhancing and encouraging South-South cooperation and facilitating a collective dialogue of the South countries with the industrialized nation-states.
Rajiv Gandhi was instrumental in modernizing the Indian armed forces. India developed missiles like Prithvi, Trishul, Agni, etc. during his leadership. The defense spending was one fifth of the total government expenditure. He helped India enhance her image and stature in world politics. India’s standing in the world had improved a great deal the only unresolved issue was that of SriLanka for which he lost his life.
Rajiv Gandhi government took vigorous measures to reform the government bureaucracy and liberalize the country's economy. He is credited with promoting the introduction of computers in India. The economic policies adopted by Rajiv Gandhi were different from his precursors. His government’s measures to reduce the "Red Tapism" were remarkable. In 1986, Rajiv Gandhi announced a "national education policy" to modernize and expand higher education programs across India. Rajiv Gandhi brought a revolution in the field of information technology and telecom. The idea helped in originating the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, popularly known as MTNL. He was the man to transcend telecom services to the rural India or "India in true sense". Rajiv Gandhi introduced India to modern science and technology, which he considered as the very essence of development. He said, 'Freedom and racism cannot co-exist. Science and poverty cannot co-exist.'
Rajiv Gandhi laid great emphasis on the green revolution which he looked upon as being extremely important for agricultural development. He spoke ardently about social justice. For him, equality among people was extremely important, because a society ridden with class and caste distinction was a hindrance to development.
Rajiv Gandhi was posthumously awarded the Highest National Award of India, Bharat Ratna 1991.

Congress to follow Priyanka Gandhi's formula to form district, city committees
The innovative formula of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, daughter of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and sister of party Vice President Rahul Gandhi, tasted success in stemming the factionalism and strengthening the party base in Raebareli and Amethi and now the Congress party is replicating it in all the other districts in Uttar Pradesh.
Priyanka Gandhi had evolved the new strategy for formation of district and city committees and implemented it in Raebareli, the Lok Sabha constituency of her mother Sonia Gandhi, and later in Amethi, Rahul Gandhi's parliament constituency.
Under the system, the bio-data of the interested Congress workers are sought in a set format and then interviews are held. A party worker is selected to a committee, till block level, based on the information in the bio-data and the interview. Now, all of UP has been divided into four parts each headed by four AICC secretaries in charge of state —- Naseeb Singh, Prakash Joshi, Rana Goswami and Zubair Khan. They have already started holding interviews in districts to finalise the district and city committees.
During the Congress party's last re-organisation, district and city presidents were elected and given free hand to select the 35-member committee, comprising seven vice-presidents, 10 general secretaries, 16 secretaries and a registrar apart from the president.
Wth this system the party leadership is being able to meet majority of the active and prominent workers in the district and listen to their grievances as well. The interviews are being conducted at the district level in the presence of newly-appointed district and city presidents, concerned zonal presidents, co-ordinators and AICC secretary in-charge of the district. The names finalised are sent to state party president for approval. All zonal heads and AICC secretaries have been asked to finalise the district and city committees by August 25.
Priyanka Gandhi had evolved the new strategy for formation of district and city committees and implemented it in Raebareli, the Lok Sabha constituency of her mother Sonia Gandhi, and later in Amethi, Rahul Gandhi's parliament constituency.

Innovative methods by Priyanka Gandhi to strengthen Congress
Raebareli: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, daughter
of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and sister of party Vice President Rahul
Gandhi, has found an innovative way to pick leaders. She had some specific
questions to the 95 hopefuls whom she had interacted at Raebareli over the past
two days, in a bid to finalise names of Congress presidents for each of the
town’s 31 wards.
The exercise was part of Priyanka Gandhi’s
efforts to strengthen the party organisation in her mother’s Lok Sabha
constituency. “You have family and social responsibilities; how can you find
time for party work? If you are made a party ward president, how will you
function as a leader?” Priyanka Gandhi asked the Mukesh Kumar Singh, a
candidate for Ward 21, whose father and grandfather too are Congress
activists. “I told her that my legal
practice was a kind of social work and that I met many people every day. I said
I would extend my social service to a greater number of people. If I am chosen
a party leader, I shall follow the party’s policies and implement its agenda at
the ward level.”
The three other questions that Priyanka
asked candidates, besides making enquiries about their family background, were:
Why do you want to be a Congress leader and since when have you developed a
preference for the party and have been following its policies? How should one
get a Congress voter out of his home and bring him to the poll booth? How would
you counter the campaign against the Congress?
A candidate for Ward 15, trader Lalit
Singh, said: “Priyankaji doesn’t give you much time to think. She insisted that
I answer quickly; she said she didn’t want laboured thoughts, nor answers aimed
at pleasing her.”
The Congress workers are quite impressed
with this novel step of Priyanka Gandhi. Earlier, Congress district presidents
used to handpick party workers depending on their verbal expressions of
loyalty. There wasn’t much grassroots representation. But Priyanka set out to
correct this after taking over the task of strengthening the party organisation
in the constituency in October last year.
Priyanka Gandhi has been telling party
workers in the district that political challenges need to be tackled at the
micro-level. Last November, she launched a “Congress At Your Doorstep” campaign
to select village representatives for the party’s district bodies. In the past
six months, she has made 74 block and panchayat-level appointments. Congress
sources said Priyanka had visited Rae Bareli six times in the past seven months
in a bid to strengthen the party further
before the next general elections.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi is also
expected to visit Raebareli on May 15 to launch a string of development
projects.

Priyanka Gandhi in Raebareli urges workers to strengthen Congress
Raebareli , 4 April, 2013: Congress star campaigner Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid a one-day visit to Raebareli, the parliament constituency of her mother and Congress President Sonia Gandhi and interacted with the newly appointed nyaya and block panchayat presidents on Thursday.
Priyanka had visited the constituency last month also. In March this year, she was in the district for a day to kick off a special training session of nyaya panchayats and block pramukhs in Raebareli. The exercise was intended to train the new recruits of the constituency in the ideology and history of the Congress. Roping in most of the senior Congress leaders in UP, the process also involved spreading the word about the UPA II's flagship programmes that are being implemented in the state.
Priyanka Gandhi, who had also attended the first-day of the two-week training camp at Bhuvemau guest house, , asked the Congress workers to mingle aggressively, address people's concerns and strengthen the party at the grassroots. On Thursday, concluding the training programme, Priyanka Gandhi repeated her message to the Congress workers urging them that they must be ready for steer the party to a resounding win during the next elections. Congress sources says that the party leadership may undertake similar training sessions in other parliamentary and assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh.
Priyanka Gandhi also met the district in-charges of various front organisations and reviewed their work. Besides motivating those performing well to continue the good work, she warned the underperformers to improve their working.
Similarly in the meeting with District Congress Committee members, Priyanka Gandhi asked them to chalk out a strategy to further strengthen the party base in six months and said future responsibilities would be assigned to them after reviewing their performances.

Sonia Gandhi :We as the Congress Party must work united, to come up to the people’s expectations
“The
time has come to work together, as the people of our country have great
expectations from our Congress party. And, only by fulfilling the aspirations of people,
we will definitely get the mandate again in the coming Lok
Sabha elections, just a little more than a year away from now,”
declared Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
She
in her concluding address on the concluding day of on-going Chintan Shivir (brainstorming
session) here on Sunday, urged the party workers to gear-up for effective
organizational thrusts at all levels, in a meaningful manner.
“
Its time to look within, as the party. What makes us different and unique
compared to other political out-fits in the country, must be outlined very
clearly. We must answer effectively to questions as why people should vote for
the Congress,” categorically stated Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
Congress-led
UPA has completed eight and half years at the Centre. It has been a long
journey. “We have come up a long way and we must apprise the people with our
achievements. Be it about projects under UPA flagship or about various
legislations like Right to Information Act ( RTI) and many others, we must project
these to the people in general. We have to tell that we as a party have been
deeply concerned for the social justice and economic parity among all sections
of the society,” she stressed.
Notably,
at the very outset of her address at about 10.30 am on Sunday here, Congress
President Sonia Gandhi deliberated upon about the unfortunate incident of Delhi
gang-rape on December 16 last year. She strongly forwarded that death
of the gang-rape victim in the nation’s capital would not go in vain.
“She
( gang rape victim) was brave and she symbolized the spirit of new India. I
will personally see that every single woman and single girl in the country are
safe and secure,” strongly advocated Congress President Sonia
Gandhi.
She
also talked about reservation for women in the Parliament and she said that it
was the vision of late Rajiv Gandhi who forwarded for women’s reservation in
the Panchayati Raj system.
Talking
about the issue of development as being a poll plank by many political parties,
she said that as a party, the Congress is committed for overall development
with social justice and economic parity for all.
She
urged the party workers to expose all those (other political parties) which
claim the UPA flagship projects as their own. Congress President Sonia Gandhi
said, “We have not discriminated against any state and have given financial
assistance, as required. But, many states claim the Central projects as their
own, which we must expose.”
“Congress-led
UPA at the Centre is doing all it can, for the overall development of the
nation. We as the party must also get into effective mechanism to let people
know what all we have done so far and what all we are doing for the country,”
she said.
Talking
about global economic slowdown and its effect on the Indian economy, Congress
President said that some hard decisions have been taken to keep away the likely
damages on our economy. “We as the Congress Party must make people aware about
these facts and the necessity of the decisions, taken in the interest of the
nation,” she focused. She also talked about international relations and said
that on accepted civilised structures, the country would go for it with any
other country.
In
a statement declared from the dais of the Chintan Shivir, Congress President
Sonia Gandhi said that the Congress party has been led by great people like
Mahatma Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shashtri, Indira Gandhi., Maulana Azad, Dr B R
Ambedkar, Rajiv Gandhi and many others, to make India a modern
country as it is today.
“We
as the Congress Party have been fortunate to have been led by great visionaries
and now, with their ideals, we must surge ahead to come up to the expectations
of the people of this country,” announced Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
Sonia Gandhi at AICC session: Tackling corruption, safety of women should be the priorities
“I will continue to press for women reservation Bill; Delhi Gang-rape victim’s death will
not go in vain”
Congress President Sonia Gandhi today addressed a meeting of
the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in Jaipur on the last day of the
Chintan Shivir that began on Friday. “I am delighted by the active
participation of our young leaders at the Shivir. The Chintan Shivir allowed us
to introspect on key national and international issues” said the Congress
President.
Referring her concern over corruption which according to her
is deep rooted in the entire system, Sonia Gandhi said “Let me reiterate corruption
at all levels is a deep rooted malice and all sections of society are affected
by it. As a party we must lead struggle to combat its effect. At the last AICC
session, corruption was major issue. I laid out a five-point action plan then
and the government has worked on it.”
“We have introduced the Lokpal bill in Parliament. We have introduced
new path-breaking legislation for addressing public grievances and to protect
whistleblowers” added the Congress President.
Touching upon the game changing policy of Direct Benefit
Transfer (DBT) Sonia Gandhi said “We also launched the historic 'Aap Ka Paisa
Aap Ke Haath' scheme, which will stop corruption by middlemen”.
Sonia Gandhi also talked about the recent gang rape incident
in Delhi that invited wide protests across the country. “The barbaric gang-rape
of a young woman in Delhi has shaken the country. She embodied the spirit of an
aspirational India. We will ensure her death will not go in vain” said the
Congress President.
“Gender issues were discussed at the Chintan Shivir. The
Congress has been at the forefront in the struggle to empower women, and it
will continue to do so. Every woman has the fundamental right to feel safe and
secure. Public figures made unacceptable remarks against women. We cannot tolerate
mindsets that lead to crimes against women and children” she underlined.
Sonia Gandhi then declared “I assure you I will continue to
press for a law for 30 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and
assemblies”.
Exhorting the leaders to go to the people and explain the
Congress’s achievements, the party leader continued “Today is also the time for
the party to introspect and see how we are better than our opponents. We need
to clearly explain to the people why we are a better political choice. We have
the support of all sections of the society. The Congress is especially
concerned about the welfare of the backward sections, women and farmers”.
She also sent out a warning; “We will fight forces that
threaten the unity and integrity of the country”.
Listing out UCongress-led UPA Govt’s achievements, the
chairperson of the claition said “Congress has worked to free the country from
poverty. Our UPA government has worked very effectively under the leadership of
Manmohan Singh”.
While defending the Centre’s economic reform measures, she
added “Global recession is having an effect on India and has forced the
government to take some hard decisions, which have hit the people” and told the
Congress leaders, “We should explain to the people the reasons for these hard
economic decisions”.
Admitting that the people have losing faith in politicians,
Sonia Gandhi reminded “People are losing faith in politicians. We have to
understand why this is happening”.
The Congress president also spoke about the need for electoral
reforms and said that the Election Commission (EC) must introduce the necessary
changes. Sonia Gandhi also asked the party members to work with unity and
discipline saying that their victory was in the victory of the party.
“There are only 15 months left to the Lok Sabha elections.
If we work well, there is no doubt we will be re-elected again. This is the
time to work hard. As the country's main political party, the people's
expectations from us is higher. We cannot let down the people who have put their
faith in us” she said while concluding her address.
