Nation pays tribute to Indira Gandhi on her 95th birth anniversary
Needs at least Flash Player Ver.9 to Play Download Here
November 19 is the 95th birth anniversary of one the most charismatic leaders of modern India, our first and only woman prime minister, cherished by millions - the Iron Lady of India, Indira Gandhi. She is regarded by many as the country's best prime minister and her extensive agricultural and financial reforms are still relevant. Even after twenty eight years of her assassination, that has shocked the entire world, India’s only woman Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, has an enduring presence in the minds of most Indians. For many she remains a messiah who connected directly to the poor and underprivileged with her social welfare programmes and catchy populist slogans like garibi hatao (oust poverty). She had contributed a lot for the upliftment of the downtrodden in the country.

Sonia Gandhi in Kangra blames BJP state govt. for not implementing central schemes
Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi,
while addressing a well attended Congress rally on Tuesday at Kangra in poll
bound Himachal Pradesh slammed the ruling BJP government in the state for lack
of development in the state.
Attacking the BJP government for not implementing the
central schemes effectively, Sonia Gandhi said, “The UPA Government at the
centre released huge financial assistance for education, health, employment
generation and welfare of the women. But it is very sad that the state
government did not use these funds properly and as a result the benefits of the
central schemes did not reach the poor. There is no improvement in the lives of
the poor. The people face a lot of difficulties because of the lack of
facilities in education and health. You
should keep all these facts in mind before casting your votes and I appeal to
all of you to ensure the defeat of the anti-poor BJP government here”.
Touching upon the crucial issue of price rise Sonia Gandhi
said “We are facing challenging situations right now. You must be aware that few years back the
world witnessed serious economic crisis. The situation is worse in some parts
of the world even today. We also had to
face a lot of trouble. We have to buy most of the oil from outside and the
prices of the same has increased manifold. The increase in the prices puts pressure
on us also. The UPA government still is
making an effort to support people; why can't state governments do the same for
people?” and asked “Is it not the responsibility of the state governments also
to take all possible measures to help the poor in their states? In Congress- ruled states, economically
weaker sections get three extra LPG cylinders and they also reduced the VAT on
fuel”.
Sonia Gandhi also
explained about the benefits of Foreign Direct Investment in retail. “The UPA
Government is committed to protect the interests of the farmers. That is why we
helped them by waiving off their loans. The farmers in villages are forced to
sell their products for cheaper prices and those were later sold in cities for
big prices. We want the farmers get proper and adequate prices for their
produce. This will be possible only if the farmers are able to sell their goods
directly at the cities. I want to ask, should farmers not get the money for
their hard work? People should get their security needs at a fair and
affordable price. And this is the concept behind allowing FDI in retail. The
important thing is that every state has the liberty not to implement FDI in
their state” she said.
While concluding her
address the Congress leader requested the voters to ensure every single vote
for the Congress and urged them to become a part in the process of development
and welfare of Himachal Pradesh.

Rahul Gandhi : Only Congress change the system with the help of the youth
Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi encouraged the tens of thousands of supporters on Sunday, at a big Congress rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan, defending the UPA government and exhorting the youth to join politics. He also used the opportunity to launch a blistering attack on the opposition for halting the welfare policies of the central government.
Rahul Gandhi vowed to fight to modernise the country through reforms that he said would help the poor and provide jobs for the poor. "We need economic reforms because only when businesses operate well will there be progress, and then we can run programmes to benefit the poor," he said.
"The world is saying that India is standing up," he said at the rally adding "The youth here will show not just India but also the whole world the way forward."
He also slammed the opposition for halting the central policies which are beneficial for the poor. "Our country is fast growing and the entire globe appreciates that. But here the opposition just opposes all our development oriented policies. They are not bothered about the losses of the farmers, workers or the youth. We also were in opposition. When the Kargil war broke out, we stood by the government and extended our whole hearted support to the Vajpeyee Government. We never opposed any move by the government which is helpful for the country and the people. Because, the country is supreme for us" he said.
Reiterating the need to change and cleanse the political system Rahul Gandhi said "We have to open the door of the system for all. We will have to listen to the lakhs people are assembled here. They are the future and we should give them a chance to become the leaders of tomorrow. If we want the country to surge ahead, we the Congress party, should open our doors for the youth and common people. Only we can do it. The opposition can only create obstructions".
While concluding his address Rahul Gandhi said "I am confident that our country will stand up and the entire world will appreciate us. The youth here will show not just India but also the whole world the way forward. The Congress will help them by giving space in our political journey".

Sonia Gandhi in Shimla urges the Himchal people to oust BJP and support Congress
Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi,
while addressing a well attended Congress rally on Tuesday at Shimla - the
capital of poll bound Himachal Pradesh- launched a blistering attack on the
ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state government and urged the voters to
oust the anti-poor BJP govt and bring back a pro-development Congress govt. in
the state.
“What BJP did for this state in the past five years? Why the
state of affairs is so pathetic here?” asked Sonia Gandhi and added “ Had they
paid little more attention towards development, the situation would have been
much better here. Because of the scarcity of electricity and water the people
here are facing a lot of difficulties”. “The educated youth here are jobless.
There are no sufficient teachers in schools and adequate doctors in hospitals.
The farmers and other workers also have been facing hardships at present. The
life of my sisters here are full of troubles. What happened to the promises
made by the BJP? It has shattered your dreams. The duty of a government should
ensure welfare of the poor and justice to all sections of the society” argued
the Congress President.
Detailing the Congress-led UPA’s measures to tackle
corruption Sonia Gandhi said “It was the Congress and UPA which the crucial
legislation of Right To Information, which is a powerful tool to fight
corruption. It was the Congress, which
made a strong Lokpal Bill to fight corruption and got it passed in the Lok
Sabha. But who stopped the passage of the same in the Rajya Sabha? It was the
BJP which stalled it”. “They are not serious about corruption and their fight
against corruption is just a show off. In fact, they are not against graft but
are against the Congress” added Sonia
Gandhi.
Taking on the BJP led state government the UPA Chairperson continued,
“The rise in the prices of essential commodities is a serious matter of concern
for us and we understand the difficulties of the common man due to this. The Central Government has been putting in
its serious efforts to control the price rise but the state governments also
have a similar responsibility to take adequate measures to reduce the burden of
the people. When the Congress run state governments increased the limit of gas
cylinders from 6 to 9 to benefit my sisters there, why the state government
here could not take such a step?”
